AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. If you have AIDS, your body’s immune system is weakened and less able to fight off infections.

HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. People can carry HIV for years without having any symptoms. They feel just fine! However, they can still pass HIV on to others. HIV is transmitted through blood, breast milk, semen and vaginal secretion. It is not transmitted through saliva.

Two of the most common ways to get infected with HIV are: Having unprotected sex with someone who is already infected, and Sharing needles or works when shooting up.
